ExAF in Person-centered and Experiential Counseling, Coaching and Continuing Education

Stoppages and dead-end situations in clinical and non-clinical settings benefit from imaginary space and alternative world experiences

Clients, coachees and trainees can find real life solutions through unexpected and unpredictable experiences that are affective, sensory based and playful

Expressive Arts Focusing ExAF brings about such experiences. Focusing and the arts are powerful tools to open up and transform structure-bound experiencing and cognitive and emotion-based schemes

Therapeutic Principles

Empathic Curiosity for Differences (Christiane Geiser) is the main therapeutic principle being put into practice here. Aesthetic Empathy (Dicker-Brandeis) is another useful principle as any therapeutic process is transformed by empathic art making. Both go along with The Revolutionary Pause (Mary Hendricks), a one minute wait for the body to carry forward art experiencing with precision

An ExAF informed practice of the Revolutionary Pause is to pendulate between listening and Sensorimotor Art Therapy activity: Holding on to autonomous bilateral drawing movements coming from the whole body (without using art materials or expressing content), the body has time to find its next right step

Art making itself is a carrying forward: 'Any action or interaction is a carrying forward of the body' (Eugene Gendlin, The Process Model)

ExAF art activities are facilitated by the professional but start from the body sense of the practitioner. Clients, coachees and trainees are experts of their own processing. They are therapeutic partners in finding out what art directives are most inducive for their body's life forward direction

This working model is highly experiential and person-centred, and functions best with a wide range of methods being offered to match individual needs

The therapeutic process is carried forward through circular loops of aesthetic experiencing, expressing and finding meaning. The outcome is improvement in self-regulation, self-restoring and self-empowerment

ExAF Informed Peacebuilding

Expressive Arts Focusing ExAF applications contain a practice called Creative Compassion. The practice uses the force of Focusing and the arts to contribute to global efforts for peace

Creative Compassion empowers people to use their Art Sense for building Relational Empathy: Practitioners learn to bodily respond to Fine Arts material from persecuted artists and express their feelings through experiential arts activities

Following the wisdom of the body practitioners come to synthezise divergent emotions and inner states, and experience a sense of the Bigger Us
